Quite literally not my cup of tea...
Being a long-time Twinings fan and a lover of smoke (bacon, fish, cheese, campfire cooking...), I assumed I would love Lapsang Souchong, but surprisingly, I don't. According to my particular taste buds, the smoke is very definitely the dominant flavour, rendering the tea element slightly weak and wishy-washy. I'll admit to having a preference for strong (some people would say "stewed") black tea, my favourite varieties being Twinings' Assam and English Breakfast, so perhaps the more delicate backdrop used in this blend just isn't my bag. I've actually tried mixing the Lapsang with one of my regulars, which is better, but still not wholly enjoyable as the biggest obstacle to overcome for me is its distinctive pine taste which -- although playing second fiddle to the aforementioned smokiness -- permeates every single sip. I'm very fond of the scent of pine, but to taste it is quite a strange and unpleasant experience; drinkable disinfectant, anyone!?
This could well be the...
Wonderful
It really is smokey and mysterious! Perfect during a cold, early morning or a thunderstorm. It's certainly more of a winter tea, since I found it quite heavy, even without milk.
If you like lighter teas, this probably isn't for you.
Not smoky enough
Either my tastebuds are getting dull in my old age, or Twinings have reduced the amount of smokiness in the tea.
